The main smelting methods for bearing steel include:
1. vacuum degassing, mainly used for the production of high quality civil high-carbon chromium bearing steel in accordance with GB/T18254 "high-carbon chromium bearing steel", the production process is: EAF-LF- VD-CC (or IC). The bearing steel produced by vacuum degassing method not only greatly reduces the oxygen content in the steel and improves the purity of the steel, but also reduces the content of hydrogen and nitrogen in the steel, eliminating the generation of white spot defects.
2. Electroslag remelting (ESR) electroslag process is the use of electrical energy will need to purify the bearing steel made of self-consumption electrode, in the superheated slag melting, purification, followed by forced cooling in the water-cooled crystallizer solidified into ingots of a remelting and refining process. The bearing steel produced by electroslag remelting method, although the oxygen content in the steel can not be effectively reduced, but can greatly improve the shape and distribution of non-metallic inclusions in the steel, so that its fine, uniform, diffuse distribution, which greatly reduces the harmful effects of non-metallic inclusions. On the other hand, due to the unique cooling method of electroslag remelting method, the bearing steel produced has excellent as-cast organization, low segregation, high density, and the carbide inhomogeneity is greatly improved. So the contact fatigue life and reliability of electroslag bearing steel is very high, is the production of military bearings, precision bearings, railroad bearings, high temperature bearings and other high reliability requirements of the bearing materials used in the main smelting method.
3. Double vacuum (VIM + VAR), that is, the first use of vacuum induction furnace (VIM) smelting billet as an electrode, in the vacuum self-consumption arc furnace (VAR) remelting production of low oxygen content, ultra-pure bearing steel, the main advantages of this method of smelting: the full use of vacuum induction furnace melting to remove gas, non-metallic inclusions and the ability of harmful elements, thus obtaining a high purity electrode; the use of vacuum Self-consumption remelting secondary removal of stable inclusions, water-cooled crystallizer fast solidification and avoid refractory tarnishing characteristics, to obtain high purity, high density and chemical composition and microstructure of uniform bearing steel. The ultra-high purity bearing steel produced by this smelting method is mainly used for aero-engine bearings.
