How to Choose Quenching Oil?

Aug 19, 2021

When selecting the appropriate quenching oil, full consideration must be given to the material, shape, size, cross-sectional size, deformation, hardening layer depth, brightness, heat treatment process and equipment of the bearing parts to be processed. Excellent quenching oil is made of refined base oil (usually paraffin-based) with high thermal stability and various additives that can improve service performance and service life.

For high-carbon chromium bearing steel, during the quenching cooling process, the change of pearlite body type should be prevented to avoid defects such as impermeability or soft spots due to quenching quentite tissue exceeding the standard. Therefore, the cooling speed of quenching oil must be greater than that of bearing steel. However, the cooling speed should not be too large, so as not to generate greater internal stress on bearing parts, resulting in cracking or large quenching deformation.

Under normal conditions, if the quenching temperature is high, the insulation time is long, and the original structure is fine, the critical cooling speed will be smaller. At this time, you can choose quenching oil with small cooling capacity.

For bearing parts with large wall thickness, if you want to get enough hardening layers, you should choose quenching oil with a relatively fast cooling speed. For thin-wall bearing rings, quenching oil with slow cooling speed should be selected. For bearing parts with complex shapes, quenching oil with short steam film stage and fast cooling speed should be selected.

For bearing rings that require small deformation, it is best to choose graded quenching oil.

With the widespread application of protective atmosphere and controllable atmosphere heat treatment production lines, more and more attention has been paid to the brightness of bearing parts after heat treatment, especially the chamfering and groove parts of bearings are no longer grinded, so it is required to choose bright quenching oil to meet the requirements. When choosing bright quenching oil, you should first meet the requirements of cooling speed and then meet the requirements of brightness.
