How does the Operating Temperature Affect the Seals of Double Row Angular Contact Ball Bearings?

Apr 20, 2022

Both low and high temperatures can affect the effectiveness of the seals of double row angular contact ball bearings. At low temperatures, the seal lip will lose its elasticity, thus becoming hard and brittle, the seal will be less effective and the seal will be more susceptible to mechanical damage. If the seal material and shrinkage rate are different, the static seal between the outer diameter of the seal and the housing shaft bore will also be affected. To avoid such problems in the case of aluminum bearing housings, radial shaft seals with flexible outside diameters are recommended.

Friction, circumferential velocity of the seal lip, temperature, viscosity of the sealed media and the specific heat transfer condition of the shaft will affect the temperature at the seal location and the temperature between the lip and the lubricating film on the opposite side. High temperatures generally destroy the lubricating film. Inadequate lubrication is one of the most common causes of premature seal failure in double row angular contact ball bearings. For applications with consistently high temperatures, special high-temperature lip materials should be used, for example, seals made of fluoroelastomer (FPM) or polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE).
