The Relationship Between Grinding Defects and Heat Treatment of Double Row Self Aligning Ball Bearings

May 08, 2022

The grinding cracks of double row self aligning ball bearings rings are caused by the internal stress generated by the surface grinding of the parts and the internal stress caused by the tissue transformation exceeding the fracture limit of the material, and the original organization and residual stress of the parts will certainly affect the generation of cracks and other grinding defects during the grinding process.

1. Heat treatment quenching tissue overheating and residual austenite

The residual austenite in quenched steel is more likely to undergo tissue transformation and produce grinding cracks under the action of grinding heat. The overheated quenching organization itself has low strength, and under the same tensile stress, it is more likely to crack and form grinding cracks.

2. Insufficient tempering after quenching

The superposition of the residual internal stress inside the part and the super poor deformation of the collar with the grinding stress will easily lead to grinding cracks during the grinding process.

3. Deformation during collar grinding

Some thin-walled, light-load series bearing rings with salt bath quenching are subject to constant changes in part size during grinding process, such as elliptical outside diameter after the outer diameter finished grinding the rings and then grinding the inner diameter. Even if the collar is tempered at high temperature and a very small feed is used for grinding, this phenomenon can be improved, but it cannot be completely solved. As a quenching medium, the unreasonable water content in the salt solution is the root cause of such problems, so the heat treatment quenching should be performed strictly according to the process.
