Deep Groove Ball Bearings

What is Deep Groove Ball Bearings

Deep groove ball bearings are the most widely used bearing type and are particularly versatile. They have low friction and are optimized for low noise and low vibration which enables high rotational speeds. They accommodate radial and axial loads in both directions, are easy to mount, and require less maintenance than other bearing types. Deep-groove ball bearings are great for handling large loads and fast operating speeds. They can withstand a radial load and a limited axial (or thrust) load. In short, deep-groove ball bearings are a good option if there will be pressure applied to the bearing from both the side of a shaft (radial) and along the shaft (axial).

Advantages of Deep Groove Ball Bearings

Versatility

Because they can carry radial and axial loads, they have a wider range of applications for many industries.

Cost savings

Deep groove ball bearings create less friction torque. This lowers operating temperature (which extends the life of the bearing) and reduces energy cost of running equipment (such as conveyor belts).

Less upkeep

Because of their simple design, low operating temperature, and low friction, deep groove ball bearings have a longer expected shelf life than other bearings. They do not require additional lubrication after installation, which also means less maintenance downtime.

Low coefficient of friction

With less coefficient of friction, high limiting speed, large size range and variations of structure, deep groove ball bearings are suitable for precision instruments.

Deep Groove Ball Bearing Sealing Types

Deep groove ball bearings usually come in three forms: open, shielded, and sealed. The choice comes down to the requirements of the application, but more often than not, the sealed type is preferred to enhance their performance and longevity.

The shielded and sealed types are commonly known as maintenance-free bearings, a feature that makes them highly attractive for many applications.

Deep groove ball bearings often come equipped with various sealing options. Common sealing types include:

Metal Shields: Also known as non-contact sealing, these shields provide moderate protection against contaminants and are suitable for applications with lower contamination risk. Not suitable for water proofing.

A metal shield is attached to the outside ring. The inner ring incorporates a V-groove and labyrinth clearance to keep out dirt and seal in the grease.

Rubber Seals: Ideal for environments with high contamination levels, rubber seals provide enhanced protection against dust, moisture, and other external elements.

These seals are usually divided into two groups: Non-contact, contact.

Non-contact rubber seals incorporate synthetic rubber molded to a steel plate in the outer ring. These seals are very good to keep dust and other contaminants out. However, they are not good for water proofing.

Contact rubber seals are very similar to non-contact rubber seals, but the edge of these ones is always in contact with the V-groove along the inner ring surface. These feature makes them the best choice for applications with a high exposure to contaminants since these seals can prevent any contaminant to enter into the grease, even water.

Types of Deep Groove Ball Bearings

Standard Deep Groove Ball Bearings (SKF 6200 series)
The 200 series is the most common ball bearing design found in most standard applications. 200 series Deep groove ball bearings are used in electric motors, hand tools like drills and saws, and hundreds of other applications from automotive to medical devices. These bearings handle light to moderate and some heavy loads but are primarily used for medium-load applications. They truly are the most utilized ball bearing series. 200 series ball bearings are made of chrome steel. Standard DGBBs (Deep Groove Ball Bearings )are engineered to handle both radial and axial loads effectively, making them the best choice for applications like electric motors, household appliances, and general industrial machinery.

Shielded Bearings (FAG 6300ZZ)
Shielded bearings incorporate metal shields to protect against dirt and debris. While they don't completely seal the bearing, these shields significantly reduce the ingress of contaminants and the leakage of lubricant. They are ideal for environments where there's potential for contamination but still a need for temperature and speed performance, such as in certain industrial settings. 300 series DGBB ball bearings are ideal for heavy-duty applications.

Sealed Bearings (FAG 6000-2RSR)
6000 series bearings are best used in light duty applications. In the case of a 6000-2RSR size it will feature rubber seals on both sides while offering superior protection against contaminants and better lubricant retention. Suited for applications where contamination and moisture are major concerns, sealed bearings may have lower speed limits due to increased seal friction. They are commonly found in agricultural machinery, outdoor equipment, and high-contamination industrial settings.

High-Temperature Bearings (NTN 6200HT200)
NTN and other manufacturers offer 200 series bearings designed for high-temperature environments. Offers these bearings which use heat-stabilized materials and special lubricants. They can operate in temperatures up to 200°C, making them suitable for applications like kilns and steel mills, where standard bearings would fail due to the extreme heat.

Ceramic Ball Bearings (Timken 9106PP)
9100 series utilizing ceramic balls, these bearings are lighter, harder, and more wear-resistant than their steel counterparts. They offer reduced friction, lower operating temperatures, and minimal lubrication requirements, making them ideal for high-speed applications such as dental drills, spindles, and high-performance motors.

Stainless Steel Bearings (SKF W6205-2RS1)
Constructed entirely of stainless steel, including the balls, races, and cages, these bearings offer superior corrosion resistance. They are particularly suited for environments where there is exposure to corrosive elements, making them ideal for use in food processing, medical equipment, and marine applications.

Load capacity and operating conditions: The load capacity of the bearing is a critical factor in determining its suitability for an application.Engineers must also consider the type of loads (radial or axial), as well as any shock or vibration that may occur during operation.

Speed requirements: Deep groove ball bearings have different speed ratings, which indicate the maximum speed at which they can rotate without generating excessive heat or wear.It is essential to select a bearing with a speed rating that matches the application's requirements.

Temperature and environmental factors: The operating temperature and environmental conditions can impact the bearing's performance and lifespan.Factors such as humidity, dust, dirt, and corrosive substances can all affect the bearing's ability to operate effectively.

Shaft and housing fit: The bearing's internal and external fits must match the shaft and housing dimensions to ensure proper alignment and prevent excessive wear.

Lubrication and maintenance requirements: Lubrication is critical for ensuring the bearing operates smoothly and efficiently.Engineers must select the appropriate lubricant for the application and consider the maintenance requirements, including how often the bearing needs to be re-lubricated.

Selecting the right deep groove ball bearing requires careful consideration of various factors, including load capacity, speed requirements, environmental conditions, shaft and housing fit, and lubrication needs. By taking into account these criteria, engineers can select bearings that provide reliable and long-lasting performance.

Process of Deep Groove Ball Bearings

Preparation of bearing materials
Preparation of materials is the first step to make ball bearings. The steels are first heated to about 1710 degree Celsius to eliminate as many impurities as possible. Then the components are used to form high carbon chromium bearing steel, which has an extremely high tensile strength. Then it is formed to necessary shapes and sizes for the productions of different types of bearings. They are formed into wires, plates, tubes, bars and so on.

Forging
The steel bar is first heated then cut. It is then pressed by machine and molded into inner and outer ring shapes. The designated shapes are formed by hot forging.

Turning
For the turning of the inner ring, first, the surface on one side is cut, then the other. After that, the bore is cut. Then, it is chamfered. Finally, the raceway is cut, and the turning of the inner ring is completed. The turning of the outer ring is similar to that of the inner ring. The marks are stamped on the side surfaces of the ring indicating the information such as the brand and part number. Nowadays, more manufacturers are using laser marking machines.

Heat treatment
Because the inner and outer rings work under tremendous pressure and they repeatedly go through rolling motions, they must be extremely rigid and wear-resistant. So, they have to go through quenching, which they are heated between 800 and 860 degrees Celsius, then instantly cooled. To boost wear resistance, they are held at 1450 to 200 degrees for a long period, they cooled slowly. This process is called tempering. Tempering must be done soon after quenching to reduce the risk of cracking.

Grinding
For the grinding of the outer ring, the side surface of the ring is first ground. Then the outer surface is ground so that it is precisely perpendicular to the side surface. Then using the outer surface as a reference, the raceway groove is honed. The same process applies to the inner ring.

Making of steel balls
The steel balls are more difficult to make even though their shape is very simple. To make steel balls, the wires are first cut and formed into spherical shapes between dies. Then the balls are continuously rolled to create smoother surfaces. After undergoing heat treatment, they are repeatedly polished with grindstones to improve their surface finish. Then their diameters are measured. They are sorted and delivered to the assembly plant. This entire process takes a few days.

Making of retainers
The retainers for deep groove ball bearings are typically manufactured by press molding the steel plates.

Assembly
There are slight gaps between the inner and outer rings and the steel balls, which is known as the internal clearance. Different clearances apply to the bearings according to various applications.

Design and Construction of Deep Groove Ball Bearings

The design and construction of deep groove ball bearings consist of four main components: the inner and outer rings, rolling elements, cage or retainer, and seals or shields.

Inner and outer rings: The inner ring is part of the bearing that rotates with the shaft, while the outer ring remains stationary.
These rings are typically made of steel and are precision-machined to ensure a proper fit and smooth operation.

Rolling elements: Deep groove ball bearings feature steel balls that roll between the inner and outer rings, allowing for smooth rotation and minimal friction.
The number and size of the balls vary depending on the bearing's size and load capacity.

Cage or retainer: The cage or retainer keeps the rolling elements evenly spaced and prevents them from colliding with each other.
This component is often made of stamped steel, brass, or plastic and comes in various designs, including one-piece snap-in retainers and multi-part cages.

Seals or shields: Seals and shields help to protect the bearing from contamination and moisture while retaining lubricants.
Seals are made of rubber or synthetic materials and provide better protection against contaminants but produce more friction than shields.
Shields, on the other hand, are usually made of steel or plastic and are less effective at preventing contaminants from entering the bearing but generate less friction.

How To Clean Deep Groove Ball Bearings

When disassembling the deep groove ball bearing of the lower bearing for maintenance, first record the appearance of the bearing, confirm the residual amount of lubricant, and wash the bearing after sampling the lubricant for inspection. As the cleaning agent, gasoline and kerosene are generally used.

The cleaning of the removed bearing is divided into coarse cleaning and fine cleaning. They are respectively placed in the container, and a metal mesh pad is placed at the bottom first so that the bearing deep groove ball bearing does not directly contact the dirt of the container. During rough cleaning, if the bearing is rotated with dirt, it will damage the bearing rolling surface, so be careful. In the rough cleaning oil, use a brush to remove grease and adhesions. After it is roughly cleaned, transfer to the fine cleaning.

Cleaning is to carefully clean the bearing deep groove ball bearing while rotating in the cleaning oil. In addition, the cleaning oil should always be kept clean.
